Voicing is an important – often overlooked – step in piano care and maintenance, and many piano players incorrectly assume voicing is the same as tuning.
Tuning refers to pitch issue, while voicing refers to tonal qualities of the piano.
Tone is produce by the hammer when it hits the string, a skilled Piano Technician alter the tonal qualities by changing the firmness of the hammer.
If the tone of a piano is too bright, a Technician can “soften” the hammer with the special tools that holds needles, and sticking it into the hammer felt at specific locations to loosen up the felt fibers.
